The 5 Digitalization Trends Shaping the Cruise Industry Next Year

The cruise industry is experiencing one of its most significant periods of technological transformation in recent years. Following a phase marked by demand recovery and the need to improve the passenger experience, cruise lines are accelerating investments in automation, biometrics, sustainability, and new digital systems designed to streamline operations.

Next year will be particularly shaped by technologies aimed at reducing friction throughout the travel experience and delivering a more personalized journey. The digital management of border requirements and travel documentation will also play a growing role, becoming increasingly important for both cruise companies and travelers.

These are the five trends that will define the industry’s immediate future.

Biometric Boarding

The traditional boarding process is evolving toward much faster and more automated models. The combination of facial recognition, document validation, and smart gates will help reduce queues and speed up access to the ship.

Several cruise lines are already deploying biometric systems at cruise terminals. MSC, for example, has partnered with Vision-Box to develop a fully integrated biometric experience at its new Miami terminal, where passengers can complete part of the process before arriving at the port using a digital identity linked to the company’s app.

This trend is also advancing across Europe and Latin America. Ports such as Alicante and Tarragona are incorporating automated systems compatible with the new European EES and ETIAS controls, while Brazil is working on biometric platforms to accelerate boarding and strengthen security.

In addition to reducing waiting times, these technologies improve border control and optimize the management of large passenger volumes.

Smarter Apps

Mobile applications are no longer just informational tools. They are becoming the true operational hub of the cruise experience.

New apps now integrate features such as:

  • Pre-check-in
  • Digital keys
  • Restaurant and entertainment reservations
  • Excursion management
  • Onboard payments
  • Real-time communication
  • AI-powered assistants

The trend points toward applications capable of anticipating traveler behavior through data analysis and personalized recommendations. This will enable smoother experiences while increasing both satisfaction and onboard spending.

Integration with wearable technologies, such as smart wristbands or digital credentials linked to cabins and onboard services, will also continue to grow.

Automated Border Requirements

One of the major challenges for cruise lines is the growing complexity of international regulations. Passengers increasingly require digital documentation, electronic authorizations, and pre-travel validations to enter certain countries.

As a result, one of the most important trends will be the automation of communications related to border requirements and mandatory travel documentation.

Companies are beginning to invest in platforms capable of sending personalized information based on:

  • Passenger nationality
  • Booked itinerary
  • Planned port calls
  • Regulatory changes
  • Health or immigration requirements

The goal is to reduce boarding incidents and minimize issues related to visas, electronic permits, or incomplete documentation.

In Europe, the introduction of the EES and ETIAS systems is accelerating this digital transformation. Ports and tourism operators will need to adapt to new models of automated identity validation and entry authorization.

In this context, specialized solutions such as EntryDocs by Smartvel are gaining relevance within the travel ecosystem by enabling the automated delivery of updated and contextualized travel requirements for each passenger.

Pre-travel digital communication will therefore become a key element in improving the passenger experience and avoiding operational friction.

Sustainable Technology

Sustainability is no longer just a reputational issue. It has also become a technological priority for the cruise industry.

Cruise lines are investing in digital systems capable of monitoring energy consumption, optimizing routes, and reducing emissions. MSC, for example, maintains its goal of

achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 through advanced monitoring and energy-efficiency technologies.

At the same time, ports are modernizing infrastructure to incorporate:

  • Shore power systems
  • Alternative fuels
  • Operational automation
  • Smart maritime traffic management

Seatrade Cruise’s “Port Technology Report” highlights how port digitalization and biometrics will coexist with new solutions focused on sustainability and energy efficiency.

Artificial intelligence will also begin to play an important role in optimizing onboard consumption, especially in climate control, predictive maintenance, and food management.

Connected Terminals

Cruise ports are evolving toward fully digitalized infrastructures. The goal is no longer simply moving passengers, but intelligently managing massive flows of people.

New terminals will incorporate:

  • Automated gates
  • Biometric validation
  • Smart luggage systems
  • Digital signage
  • Real-time monitoring
  • Predictive queue management

MSC’s new terminal in Miami is one of the most advanced examples of this trend, with the capacity to process up to 36,000 passengers per day through biometric systems and operational automation.

The industry is increasingly seeking to replicate the smart airport experience, where travelers can complete nearly the entire journey using only their digital identity.

At the same time, integration between ports, cruise lines, and border authorities will continue to grow in order to share information more efficiently and securely.

Digitalization in the cruise sector is no longer limited to improving passenger comfort. It is completely redefining operational management, security, and the relationship between travelers, cruise lines, and destinations.

Over the next year, we will see a clear acceleration of biometric technologies, document automation, and digital platforms capable of simplifying complex processes. All with one common goal: delivering faster, safer, more sustainable, and more personalized journeys.
